Enhance English proficiency for both struggling students and those with learning disabilities in public schools in Rwanda.

Challenge Reading is fundamental to a child’s academic success and their future. It is a foundation for all learning. Teaching in the mainstream classroom cannot always meet the needs of children who are struggling with literacy. The Learning Achievement in Rwandan Schools (LARS 2022) found that student performance in English for P3 Literacy was low, with only 10.08% of the students meeting grade proficiency benchmarks in English, the current language of instruction in primary. Proficiency dropped to just 16% when assessing numeracy skills in English. For this, it is our mission to ensure every disadvantaged child receives the support they need to access quality education. That’s why we created Literacy Classes at school levels with assistive Tech-based interventions. Our volunteers undergo a week of training which equips teachers and students with the necessary skills for their placement. Public school classrooms are always crowded. Homes sometimes can be busy places, too. Support is targeted to meet individual children’s needs. Solution Reading, comprehension and spelling will be assessed on entry to the Literacy Class, with tutors creating personalized learning plans to address gaps. We provide school resource room with useful software, 3 years’ free licenses each school, and our school-based teachers are trained in effective teaching methods and the use of the software, including reading, phonics, and use multi-sensory resources and techniques to promote students’ engagement and enjoyment. Impact: Students and teachers using this innovative EdTech system, is able to utilize all their classroom materials, providing access to the general curriculum which will help them obtain classroom subject proficiency. .
